When all are moving precipitously toward excesses, none seems to be so moving. [One] who stops makes the mad rush of the others perceptible, as would a fixed point.

Take action on Ford 2 Years ago Karma: 0
From New American Dream:

Last fall thousands of you thanked Bill Ford after we told you about his company's promise to deliver 250,000 hybrid vehicles by 2010. Of course, we also noted that the proof would be in the pudding. Well, we now regret to report that Ford has changed the menu - and the pudding is nowhere to be found.

Take Action: Tell Bill Ford not to back off his promise.

Ford has announced a replacement promise to instead deliver flex fuel vehicles that can run on ethanol. This trade is inadequate. While ethanol might well help alleviate our energy problems in the future - just as better designed cities and improved transit options will - the fuel faces significant obstacles and requires new infrastructure that could take years to develop.

Americans also need economically feasible and environmentally sensitive solutions now. The best hybrid car available gets twice as many miles per gallon as the best flex fuel vehicle on the market. If Americans could all fuel up half as often, we'd enjoy huge financial savings, increased national security, and real benefits for our air quality and rapidly warming climate.

According to a recent poll, 56% of Americans believe our dependence on oil is a serious threat to our country and the world, and 84% believe automakers can do more to reduce our dependence on oil. With such a growing desire to reduce oil consumption, it's no surprise that the manufacturers who produce the most efficient vehicles are enjoying the most success. Just this week Honda, perennially dubbed "Greenest Automaker" by Union of Concerned Scientists, announced a 30% growth in quarterly profits. This July was also the first month that Toyota has ever sold more cars in the U.S. than Ford.

Urge Ford to refocus on efficient vehicles, set an ambitious target for its fleet fuel economy, and take a positive step in the fight against climate change.
